So you’ve decided to buy an HDTV or 3D Projector, or have bought one, and are looking for a new screen. Now the question is what should you look for in an HDTV ro 3D Projector Screen.
First of all, there may seem to be no difference between an HDTV or 3D Projector screen, and a standard definition projection screen other than the aspect ratio. In some cases this is true, a high quality standard definition screen may be suitable for viewing if you don’t mind the wasted space above and below the high definition image. This being said there are a few things that you will want to look for that are more important when choosing a screen for your HDTV and 3D projector than a standard definition projector. The reason being that because of the resolution of an HDTV and 3D anything that hurts the image quality is considerably more noticeable. Now one of these features that is more noticeable is the impact of the texture of the screen on the image with an HDTV and 3D projector. You will want to take extra care to make sure that the projector screen that you choose is smooth and not course. Having a course screen could create a moire effect which essentially means that very small squares will be superimposed in the picture, this is especially noticeable in lighter areas of the image.
Another feature that you will want to take extra care to make sure your HDTV and 3D Projector Screen contains is a black border. While this may sound unnecessarily this can actually have a large impact on your viewing experience. The reason why the addition of a black border can make such a big difference is that with a good screen, particularly one with a black border made of velvet, will absorb extra light, and this will make the image look better.
Something else you will want to consider is the color of the screen. If you are unable to control the ambient light situation in the area where the screen will be then it may be best to choose a screen that is more gray colored. If you can ensure that ambient light can be controlled then you may be ok with a white screen. If you’re unsure, it may be best to stick with a gray screen.
The final thing that you will want to consider is the planarity (or flatness) of the screen. Be sure to check any product reviews related to your screen, if when used the screen is not perfectly flat this can have a dramatic impact on the image. You should do your research especially when purchasing a cheaper screen as this could ruin everything.
